On MLK day of 2010 PSU launched the Campaign for Nonviolent Schools (CNS). CNS is a grassroots youth-led citywide coalition of high school and middle school students from nine youth leadership organizations (and counting) in Philadelphia, defying language, ethnic, and neighborhood divides to end all forms of school violence without pushing students into the criminal justice system.

It was only five years ago that two police officers pinned down five-year-old kindergarten student Ja’eisha Scott down onto a table, handcuffed her, and dragged her out of school and into a police cruiser after throwing a tantrum during a jelly bean counting game.1 They then refused to release Ja’eisha into her mother’s cus- tody, keeping her in the back of the car for hours.

Poverty, racial disparities and a culture of punishment rather than prevention and early intervention are key forces driving the Pipeline.

Oregon’s school-to-prison pipeline is an urgent civil rights challenge in Oregon. Mirroring a national trend, the school-toprison- pipeline in Oregon refers to the disproportionate punishment of students of color that begins with more serious punishment than their white peers in school and a greater likelihood of intervention by juvenile justice authorities.
