Positive Models for Discipline that Prevent Racial Bias

Advocacy Report
Sandler, Susan, “Turning To Each Other, Not On Each Other: How School Communities Prevent Racial Bias in School Discipline,” Justice Matters Institute (2000).

This report profiles eight schools across the country that are models of strong communities with equitable, caring discipline approaches. This report used the following criteria to identify school communities that seek to prevent racial bias in discipline, including values of inclusion, community, caring relationships, helping each student develop and reach their potential, respect for parents, incorporating the cultures of students and families, and eliminating institutional racism. Each school profiled is a public school and is made up of predominantly low-income students of color. The report describes each school’s disciplinary practices and aspects of the overall school context that supports these practices.
