LGBTQ Safe Schools and Educational Justice 101 Tues, Oct 25, 1pm ET

What is educational justice? What is the school to prison pipeline?  How do these relate to LGBTQ students and safe schools?

On Tuesday, October 25, 2011 from 11-12p PST/ 12-1p MST/ 1-2p CST/ 2-3p EST, discuss these and related issues as a participant in the National Safe Schools Roundtable's third webinar in a series.

Many social issues, among them bullying, violence and discipline, intersect and play out in schools across the country.  At the heart of these intersections are young people who we have promised a safe, accepting and engaging place to learn.  The webinar will present the basics of school discipline, the consequences of zero tolerance and punitive discipline policies, and their uneven application in the cases of students of color and/or LGBTQ students.  The webinar will also present existing alternatives to punitive discipline by highlighting current efforts to address the intersections of these important policy issues.

Guest presenters include Geoffrey Winder, Racial and Economic Justice Manager at the Gay-Straight Alliance Network, Sarah Schriber, Policy Director at the Illinois Safe Schools Alliance, and others.

Participants will be made aware of resources, model policies, and recommendations for broad-based collaborative efforts to support school communities to create the optimal climate for student learning and development that, in combination, are the only thing that will effectively prevent bullying and push out.

To RSVP, please email Sarah Schriber at sarahschriber@gmail.com.
