Decriminalizing the Classroom: NYC Students Speak Out to Fight the Militarization and Policing of Public Schools
Dignity in Schools Campaign - New York will hold a panel, "Decriminalizing the Classroom: NYC Students Speak Out to Fight the Militarization and Policing of Public Schools", at Left Forum, the largest annual conference of a broad spectrum of left and progressive intellectuals, activists, academics, organizations and the interested public.
This roundtable will feature New York City high school activists and their allies in a discussion about strategies for addressing the increased policing and criminalization of students of color in public schools. Youth organizers from Desis Rising Up and Moving and the Center for Community Alternatives will join educators from Teachers Unite and advocates from the New York Civil Liberties Union and Advocates for Children in addressing a variety of policing mechanisms—suspension policies, police officers in schools, stop and frisk, police programs targeting immigrant students, and juvenile (in)justice programs—that disproportionately impact youth of color. Roundtable participants will also discuss strategies and tactics for decriminalizing our schools such as restorative justice and the Dignity in Schools Campaign-New York.
