During the National Week of Action, communities around the country engaged in different local activities to bring people together and support local change.  Read below for highlights of activities by state, or access a list of events by date.  Here are examples of what communities around the country are doing.

  • Organizing town hall meetings, community workshops, teach-ins or focus groups with students, parents, teachers and policy-makers to exchange ideas on school pushout.
  • Testifying before local school boards or city councils about how to stop school pushout.
  • Meeting with Members of Congress to advocate for federal legislation to stop pushout.
  • Giving classroom lessons on human rights and the school to prison pipeline.

Pushing Back Against School Pushout: The Dignity in School Campaign Takes Action (Web Resource)

Across the nation, youth, parents, community members, educators and advocates joined together and raised their voices last week to testify before school boards, hold town hall meetings and organize teach-ins to advocate for positive alternatives to zero tolerance discipline with the same unified goal: to push back for dignity and fairness in schools.

Mississippi - Week of Action Events (Web Resource)

In Itta Bena, the Mississippi Delta Catalyst Roundtable, together with Southern Echo and Mississippi Valley State University (MVSU), hosted a major Week of Action event to focus on the implications of compulsory school district consolidation for school pushout.

During the Week of Action, organizations, including Blocks Together Youth Council, Project Nia, Southwest Youth Collaborative and others, organized trainings, panels and roundtable discussions on pushout.

On Tuesday October 12, the Dignity in Schools Campaign-Los Angeles Chapter organized a series of actions at the local school board discussing the impacts of school pushout.

New York City youth, parents, teachers and advocates are pushing back against pushout! During the Week of Action, DSC-NY held a teach-in to talk about positive solutions to pushout and NYCLU distributed Know Your Rights Cards at schools across the city.

The Gwinnett Parent Coalition to Dismantle the School to Prison Pipeline (STOPP), the Atlanta Community Engagment Team and Georgia Legal Services Program hosted events in Atlanta, Macon and Savannah to inform and engage community members in combating school pushout.

On Sunday, October 17, the Boston Parent Organizing Network hosted the first in a series of youth focus groups on the Code of Discipline and Dropout Prevention.

Parents and youth hosted an action to celebrate Conflict Resolution Month and raise awareness of the over-criminalization of students. Youth and parents have worked closely together in Denver to ensure the implementation of restorative justices practices in Denver schools.

Kansas Families for Education sent letters to each member of the State Board of Education, met with their regional State Board members, and submited letters to the editor to newspapers covering four Kansas counties.

Washington, DC - Week of Action Events (Web Resource)

Advocates for Justice and Education Inc, the Parent Training and Information Center for DC, organized workshops and panels for parents and educators during the Week of Action to discuss strategies for challenging school pushout in Washington, DC public schools.
