An Elementary School in Manitoba, Canada Works with Children to Understand and Overcome Misbehavior
Code of Conduct and Discipline Policy, Minnewasta School, Western School Division, Manitoba, Canada (May 2007).
The goal of discipline is to help students behave responsibly even when not under supervision, instead of punishing students and teaching them to avoid being caught. The code of conduct lists six main discipline rules, and provides detailed information on the responsibilities of students, parents and teachers in addressing the infractions. The first approach is for teachers and parents to initiate a discussion with students so that they understand what they did wrong and what they can do to fix their behavior. Teachers are responsible for taking necessary action for the first few minor student infractions. A student may be suspended for major infractions and while suspended the student creates an “action plan” explaining what happened and how to make it right. Parents are required to be involved in this process.
